48 drawings, Curaçao, 2010

Before leaving for Curaçao I proposed myself to take no pictures during my residency. I wanted to focus on drawing and connect to a slow medium, in the way explorers used it to map land, people and culture. Especially the travel journals from the 18th century and the drawings and engravings printed in these books. For example the book written by John Gabriel Stedman in 1772-1777, containing beautiful engravings depicting the slaves in Suriname. One example shows a 'black hunter' a former slave who was employed as a soldier to detect rebellious slaves.
My drawings, mostly black and white, are created intuitively: a mixture of traveling, found images plus personal fantasy. I call them, because of this intuitive approach: cosmic adventures. With this tool I tried to understand something of life on Curaçao.

The drawings are connected with an action presented on Curaçao Airport
