Tinder Touch

For the presentation of Tinder Touch at the exhibition of the Kaunas Biennial, I inserted my work in two rooms of the Mykolas Zilinskas Art Gallery, the applied art exposition. The museum was build, during Lithuania's occupation by the Soviets, in the 1980s. Big part of the museum collection was a gift from M. Zilinskas to the Soviets to free his sister out of Siberia.

The curator of the Kaunas Biennial, Virginija Vitkiene, invited me to continue the project Tinder Touch in Kaunas, Lithuania. This gave me the opportunity to connect the project with an East European context. Lithuania is a country with a rich and at the same time oppressive history, in many layers I found connections with uniforms and cloth (industry). During my residency I worked with three young Lithuania women who brought me in contact with the country's history thought their stories.

The project Tinder Touch is inspired on the way a Tinder fungi grows; a frayed underground network that may become noticeable when fruiting. I copy people’s favorite pieces of clothing in a fixed screen, a pencil grey fabric with a reflecting pattern. An uniform collection is created, but with very diverse forms. In this way I stimulated ideas about ‘propagation’. A new species to be recognized via its reflection at night and with flashlight.
