Song of the Spine
2008

A love song for the new Culture mile of Enschede. As in European medieval drama the song is performed outside and staged on different wagons. Two coaches start at the ends of the Culture mile: the old city centre and the new culture centre: Roombeek. From the inside of the coaches loudly sound bass tunes: ‘boom coaches’. The drivers guide the horses slowly through the streets. Each few minutes the bass tune stills and the coach stops. One of the drivers stands up, lays an electronic metronome with an A tone on his hart and sings a few strophe for ‘It was a lover and his Lass’ by William Shakespeare. (the bass tune is a version of the melody that later was written for this text). In the middle of the route, the drivers, a man and a women, can look each other in the eyes and the song becomes a duet.
